The Risk of AI and Remote Work: Why Human-First Leadership is Key


While reading “The Motive” by Patrick Lencioni, which dives into purpose-driven leadership, something clicked. As a coach passionate about creating valuable human connections at work, I see firsthand how remote work and AI are among the biggest challenges for leaders today. Sure, AI and remote work promise efficiency and cost savings, but there's a hidden risk: losing the human touch in our workplace relationships. In my experience, the companies that succeed in the long run aren’t just efficient—they are human-first.

Here are some of my thoughts that I wanted to share with you:

Efficiency vs. Connection

We all see AI everywhere these days. Many people call it the biggest "human revolution," yet I find that a bit ironic. How can a tool that replaces human work help us connect? At its core, AI can undermine our most basic needs: connection, purpose, creativity, and a sense of belonging.

The Remote Work Challenge

Remote work has grown fast. Many of us now work in teams where cameras are often off, and we only see colleagues as small squares on a screen. Without face-to-face time, it is hard to build real relationships. When teams are spread across different cultures and time zones, the chance to form a strong bond decreases. The work becomes more about completing tasks than about sharing a common purpose.

The Impact on Leadership

I have seen many leaders struggle today. High turnover, disengagement, and low trust are common problems. With work done in isolation or produced quickly by AI, it is hard for employees to feel a sense of ownership. How do you inspire a team that never meets in person? How do you build trust when it feels like your work is just another output generated in the blink of an eye?

Without real human connection, the work culture shifts from being supportive and collaborative to cold and transactional. When employees do not feel emotionally connected, the entire team suffers.

Finding a Better Balance

I believe the answer is simple: we must be human-first. Leaders need to focus on building strong relationships, clear communication, and trust. This means encouraging personal interactions—even if they happen over video calls—and creating moments where team members feel truly seen and heard.

In our race for efficiency, let’s not forget that people are the heart of any organization. A warm, connected workplace can be the difference between a team that just gets the job done and a team that is truly engaged and inspired.
